Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks 2011
In Caleb's Crossing, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks tells the story of the first Native American to receive a college degree from Harvard, as told through the eyes of a minister's daughter. It is 1665, and Bethia Mayfield comes of age in a small Great Harbor community, where she meets a local Native-American boy named Caleb. Both youngsters possess a passion for knowledge, and a string of fateful events leads Bethia more deeply into Caleb's orbit. She soon witnesses his acceptance to college and the limitations placed upon her own life as a woman yearning for education.
