The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead 2016
Cora didn't enjoy her enslaved life on a Georgia plantation, but she never imagined she would escape it. After the various abuses she suffers at the hands of her owner, Cora wonders if there is life beyond the fields. She meets a new slave, Caesar, who dreams of escaping slavery and living in the North, where slavery is illegal. When Caesar offers to take Cora with him to the mysterious Underground Railroad, she readily accepts. Although the real Underground Railroad was a system of safe houses that led to Northern safety, Caesar and Cora board a real underground train and ride the tracks to safety. However, the easy transportation does not guarantee easy travels. Both Cora and Caesar commit unspeakable acts on the way to freedom. Is their freedom worth the deaths of others? Is potential freedom even worth the struggle? Books & Authors
