Brooklyn by Colm Toibin 2009
In Colm Toibin's Brooklyn, a rural Irish village is the only home Eilis Lacey has ever known. As a bright young woman, Eilis could easily get a job as secretary--if only there was any work available anywhere in the economically devastated country. With the assistance of her parish priest, Eilis decides to move to America, leaving behind her family and beloved hometown. Once settled in Brooklyn, New York, she lands a job at a department store and meets Tony, a charming Italian man who is smitten with the newly arrived Irish immigrant. As the two get to know one another, and Eilis finds herself warming to this big-hearted fellow, tragedy unfolds back in Ireland, and she must decide whether to stay in Brooklyn or return to her family.
