Sunday Movie Club - His Girl FridaySunday December 16, 2018
2:00 PM until 5:00 PM
Back for its third season, mark your calendars and join us to view a variety of great movies. On two Sundays in November, December, January and February and March we will be showing a feature length movie at the Library at 2 o’clock. A wonderful opportunity to escape for a couple of hours and share a movie with friends and neighbors. After each movie there will be time to socialize and discuss the film. There is no charge for the event. Feel free to bring your own (non-alcoholic) refreshments. The timely topic of journalism is the theme of our first four movies. We look forward to seeing you at our screenings, as follows:
December 16, HIS GIRL FRIDAY, Take actors Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell; add writers Ben Hecht, Charles Lederer and Charles MacArthur, then turn them all over to director Howard Hawks and what you get is a classic--one of the funniest screwball comedies of all time. Famous for rapid-fire dialogue, this 1940 Columbia Pictures release is an adaptation of Hecht and MacArthur’s prize-winning play, The Front Page. Even today it remains relevant for its depiction of the deadline-driven, event-consuming world of newspapering. Grant plays Walter Burns, the hard-boiled editor of The Morning Post. Russell is Hildy Johnson, his star reporter. And his ex-wife. She is about to be re-married, this time to a bland insurance man, and settle down as a wife and mother in the hinterlands—an eventuation Grant is determined to sabotage. The result is a fun-house ride involving attraction, ambition, an innocent man, a bumbling sheriff, a corrupt mayor, a stern prospective mother-in-law and the lure of what may be the biggest scoop of Hildy and Walter’s careers. 1 hour, 32 minutes.
