Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Angels in Human Skin by Rev. Dr. Dirkje Legerstee

Wednesday September 4, 2019

Dutch artist and historian Dr. Rev. Dirkje Legerstee will be showing her images and stories in our Wotiz Gallery during the month of September in an exhibit called: "Angels in Human Skin."  This display will tell the story of her family's survival through World War II as Nazi war victims.  Her father was a Dutch Christian and was taken by the Nazis as a labor slave, and her mother was a Polish Jew who was a survivor of the Shoah.  Her artwork depicts a process of externalizing a story that has shaped her and haunted her imagination for decades as a second generation Holocaust Survivor sponsored to come to America.  The art installation is primarily a multimedia collage which creates a topography of emotion and history and it includes a memory map that spans 60 years, a series of double-sided panels entitled "Intercession for Humanity," a tribute to her father and much more.  There is also a song and a video of her father's testimony.  Her hope is that the installation will include an invitation into the exploration of becoming more human and humane.

There will also be an accompanying talk by Dr. Legerstee in the Keys Community Room starting at 7 PM on Wednesday, September 25th, which will tell the story of what inspired the art for our Gallery, and of how a young Polish Jew and a faithful young man from the Dutch Reformed Tradition were thrown together in the terror of war.  Before this talk, you can stop by at the Wotiz Gallery reception from 5:30-6:30 to meet Dirkje and view her exhibit.  As part of her talk at 7,  there will be an accompanying Powerpoint presentation which shows historic photographs and more to illustrate her family's story.  This tale of survival is a tribute to the power of hope in the midst of despair.  Dr. Legerstee's Wednesday presentation will also be followed up by a discussion on Saturday, September 28th from 9-12 in the Keys Community Room to include local Milton clergy, although this event is free and open to all.  Please join Dirkje at the Library during the month of September, and all details for the events mentioned previously can also be found under the dates described above.

The two programs on Sept. 25th and Sept. 28th are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
