Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction in 2017. Set in the poor, rural South, Jojo and his sister Kayla live with their grandparents. Their mother, Leonie, resorts to getting high while waiting for the children's white father to finish a prison sentence so they can be reunited. The plot spans only a few days, focusing on the road trip to the prison to pick him up. The past and present meld as ghosts reveal themselves -- and the truths of the past.
