Shipwrecks and Lifesavers: The Formation of the U.S. Coast Guard Live Zoom Presentation by Historian Mary Rasa

In honor or Memorial Day, this  lecture highlights the history of the U.S. Coast Guard through its predecessor organizations from colonial days to 1915. Two organizations merged to form the Coast Guard: the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The Revenue Cutter Service is the oldest federal sea service as it predates the US Navy with its founding in 1790. The US Life-Saving Service built its first stations in New Jersey and many of its structures are still standing, the oldest of which is in Monmouth County.

Monmouth County is crucial to the story: the first U.S. building paid for by the Federal Government was located at Sandy Hook. That building sits over at Twin Lights. And the Congressman responsible for the first funding bill was both from Allentown and a former Governor.
Mary Rasa is a historian who worked as a museum curator and park ranger for the National Park Service for 16 years. She holds a BA in Historic Preservation and a Masters in Library Science. She has conducted over one thousand programs for audiences, from school children to academic and professional conferences, seniors' groups and historical societies.
