CANCELLED Wagner and His Music

Friday August 2, 2019
10:00 AM until 12:00 PM

With instructor Cleon Cornes.

The figure of Richard Wagner straddles the 19th century like a colossus. Composer, critic, polemicist, and poet, his abundant energy allowed him to pursue a vision with a single-mindedness beyond comprehension. The German counterpoint to Verdi, he revolutionized opera and had a major impact on music and art through his ideas and creations. His operas, rooted in the Gernmanic Romantic tradition, remain (like Verdi) a cornerstone of he modern repertoire. Along with Beethoven, Wagner was the most controversial composer of the 19th century, but, unlike Beethoven, he remains a subject of controversy even today.  We will review his life and music, focusing primarily on 11 of his major operas and music dramas.

The class runs 10 am Fridays, July 5, 12, 26, August 2, 30, and September 6.
