This year is the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Rhode Island. The Portsmouth Historical Society, in conjunction with Portsmouth Free Public Library, will host noted author Christian McBurney for a lecture on this famous battle. McBurney, author of The Rhode Island Campaign: The First French and American Operation of the Revolutionary War, will speak about the conclusion of the campaign, the Battle of Rhode Island, which occurred in the vicinity of Fort Butts in Portsmouth in August 1778. The largest battle in New England during the American Revolutionary War, many feel that its importance is underrated. Using new maps prepared for the lecture, this will be McBurney’s first lecture focusing on the battle itself.
