Cheepers & Peepers @ Woodcock Nature Center

Saturday April 27, 2019
8:30 AM until 11:30 AM

Presented in collaboration with Thrown Stone Theatre Company, TownVibe, and the Ridgefield Library in honor of Earth Day. Thrown Stone is presenting a series of community events around the theme, Close To Home, building toward their third season, which features the Connecticut Premiere of Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler and the East Coast Premiere of Birds of North America by Anna Moench.

Celebrate Earth Day with these community outings at Woodcock Nature Center on April 27th. The event begins at 8:30 am with Cheepers, a Birding Walk led by Dr. Benjamin Oko, longtime
Ridgefield resident, RACE member, birding expert, and recent recipient of TownVibe’s Green Award. After a short introduction on birding, Dr. Oko will lead a 90-minute walk, teaching participants how to spot and identify the ducks, egrets, songbirds, and other “Cheepers” residing at Woodcock Nature Center. At 10:30 am, participants will gather for Peepers, a Vernal Pool Walk led by Sarah Breznen, director of education and Sam Nunes, educator at Woodcock Nature Center. Vernal Pools are temporary ponds formed in spring by rain and melting snow that serve as nurseries for amphibians, such as salamanders, wood frogs, and spring peepers- tree frogs known for their lively springtime song. Followed by a brief introduction, this 90-minute woodland walk along the trails will visit the Vernal Pools of Woodcock Nature Center and explore the role they play in the surrounding forest food web and discover the fascinating amphibians who rely on them for survival.

  • All ages welcome
  • Come with appropriate footwear, portions of trail and around pools may be muddy.
  • Please no dogs for Cheepers at 8:30am as they may disrupt the birds. Leashed dogs are welcome for Peepers at 10:30am.
