6:30 PM until 7:30 PM
- That town greens, like that in Hadley, only rarely functioned as a town “common” in the way most people imagine it?
- That even more wonders lie behind a two-story tin man sculpture in Goshen?
- That the Skinner Museum in South Hadley’s “kitchen sink” approach to collecting—it includes suits of armor, carved tribal figures, birds’ eggs, musical instruments, mounted animal heads, and old bicycles—was once innovative?
Who Knew? is a travel guide, an accessible history, and an offbeat love letter to Western Mass. The book explores local oddities, explodes tall tales, and explains the history of sights locals may have wondered.
Author Robert E. Weir, a Florence, MA, resident, earned a doctorate in American history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a former Fulbright scholar, the author of 10 books, and recently retired from nearly 40 years of high school and university teaching. He now spends part of his retirement wandering around Western Mass in search of new marvels.ed about but never stopped to appreciate.
