Fall Book Discussion SeriesTuesday November 13, 2018
3:00 PM until 4:30 PM
Carole Shmurak completes the fall mystery series The City By the Bay in this final discussion.
The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the “hard–boiled” tradition of American mysteries. Last spring, we looked at The City of Angels; now it’s time for mysteries in The City by the Bay. But whatever you do, don’t call it “Frisco”!
Isabel Spellman, PI, is a member of a highly functioning, highly dysfunctional family of private investigators. Izzy would like to leave the family firm in San Francisco, but first she must solve a fifteen-year-old cold case, which soon becomes the most important case of her life. This was Lisa Lutz’s debut novel, a funny and fast-paced story that became the start of a prize-winning, best-selling series.
