350th Writing Contest

As part of the year-long 350th Anniversary Celebration which kicks off this October, the Kent Memorial Library is sponsoring an essay contest.  The theme of the essay is Suffield:  Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.   Essays must be under 500 words long. Participants have free rein on how to utilize the theme in their essay.  The form of the essay can be a memoir, an historical piece, or science fiction if the period chosen is Suffield in the future.  The essay does not have to include all the time perspectives in the theme.  Instead, the essay can be on the Suffield of yesterday, today’s Suffield or the Suffield of tomorrow.

The age categories are:

  • Third Grade-Fifth Grade
  • Sixth Grade-Eighth Grade
  • Ninth Grade-Twelfth Grade
  • Adults

Original, unpublished essays of fewer than 500 words written by Suffield residents will be accepted for the contest at the Kent Memorial Library until October 31. Non-resident students in Suffield public schools or the Suffield Academy can also enter the contest.  All entries must include name, age category, phone number, and email address, if available.  Entries can be emailed to 350essay@gmail.com or a typed essay can be brought to the library.  The winner in each age-category will receive a $50 award.

Winners will be announced in the December issue of The Suffield Observer.

Winners of the contest will be invited to read their essays at the Suffield Tree Gala on Saturday, December 7.
