VML Cultural Series: Gravestone Girls Tour of Marshfield Cemeteries

Wednesday October 24, 2018
7:00 PM until 8:30 PM

Wednesday Night Program, October 24, 2018, 7-8:30 p.m., “Welcome to the Graveyard: A Tour of Marshfield’s Cemeteries”, presented by Brenda Sullivan of the Gravestone Girls

Just in time for Halloween!! “The Girls” visited Ventress last year to talk about cemeteries in general; this year they are back with new material and a program customized to Marshfield cemeteries! This adult-oriented presentation is about New England cemetery art, history and symbolism. The 'virtual tour', takes us from colonial burial grounds, through the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations.  It examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. Prior to the show date, “The Girls” will hit the road and go through the cemeteries in Marshfield, taking pictures for use in building the presentation with as much local content as possible.  They have tailored similar presentations for many different towns and groups, presenting to historical societies, genealogy groups, libraries and others for almost twenty years. Gravestone artwork available for purchase on the night. Free and open to the public; no tickets are required. Program Room is handicapped accessible. Cider and candy corn will be served; Halloween costumes optional!  Visit www.gravestonegirls.com
