VML Cultural Series: Author Talk and Book Signing

Wednesday November 14, 2018
7:00 PM until 8:30 PM

Wednesday Night Author Talk/Book Signing, November 14, 2018, 7-8:30 p.m., “The Black Cats of Amherst,” presented by Jim Hamilton, author. (Part of Ventress Library’s “Veterans Day Stories” programming.)

“The Black Cats of Amherst” is the story of a World War I ambulance unit that was formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in June of 1917, a few months after the United States joined the war. The unit was awarded two Croix de Guerre medals by the French, and many of the men earned individual Croix de Guerre medals. Building on diaries, letters, and other accounts, The Black Cats of Amherst tells their story. Photographs, maps, and drawings provide additional perspective. Jim Hamilton, the grandson of Black Cat Hugh Hamilton, is also the author of The Writing 69th, the story of a group of war correspondents who covered the U.S. 8th Air Force out of England during World War II. He wrote Long-Fall Survival: Analysis of the Collected Accounts, which reports on people who survived extremely long falls without the benefit of a working parachute. Hamilton helped 44th Bomb Group historian Will Lundy update and republish The 44th Bomb Group Roll of Honor and Casualties. He lives in Green Harbor. Free and open to the public; no tickets required. Program Room is handicapped accessible. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing on the night. Visit http://www.greenharbor.com/blackcats/blackcats.html
