The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

An idealistic black teenager named Elwood Curtis is unfairly sent to a juvenile reform academy in 1960s Florida. There he meets Turner, a cynical young man who believes that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. Based on the real story of a corrupt reform school that operated for over 100 years, Colson Whitehead's novel won the Pultizer Prize and was named one of the ten best novels of the decade by TIME Magazine.
