The state of California looms large in the history of mysteries. Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, set in San Francisco, and Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, set in Los Angeles, essentially began the "hard-boiled" tradition of American mysteries. A few years ago, we read books set in The City of Angels; now it's time for mysteries set in the The City by the Bay.
