Get a Life: The Biography and Memoir Book ClubTuesday April 13, 2021
11:00 AM until 12:00 PM
A Virtual Meetup - Second Tuesday of the Month at 11:00 AM
In this time of social distancing and self-isolation, it is very easy to feel disconnected from the lives and experiences of those outside our four walls.
Join us for a book club that seeks to close that gap by allowing you to walk in the shoes of someone else.
We'll concentrate on a different biography or memoir each month and peek behind the curtain of another person's choices, mistakes, regrets, and dreams. From gossipy tell-alls to poignant essays of self-reflection, we'll work together to prove Socrates right: the unexamined life isn't worth reading!
This month: Stitches by David Small
David Small, a best-selling and highly regarded children's book illustrator, comes forward with this unflinching graphic memoir. Remarkable and intensely dramatic, Stitches tells the story of a fourteen-year-old boy who awakes one day from a supposedly harmless operation to discover that he has been transformed into a virtual mute―a vocal cord removed, his throat slashed and stitched together like a bloody boot. From horror to hope, Small proceeds to graphically portray an almost unbelievable descent into adolescent hell and the difficult road to physical, emotional, and artistic recovery.
