Event: Landscaping with Native Plants - Part II

Tuesday May 9, 2017
7:00 PM until 9:00 PM

Did you know that native plants - once established - do not require the use of chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides to maintain their beauty? Or that they don’t require extra watering? Did you know that our native pollinators and birds generally prefer native plants for nectaring and seed?

To elaborate on this message, Citizens for Lexington Conservation and the Lexington Field and Garden Club will be hosting a showing of Hometown Habitat - Stories of Bringing Nature Home. This film, which focuses on developing meadow landscaping in community spaces, profiles 7 hometown habitat heroes who have created landscapes focusing on native plant species in their local communities across the country.  The narrative thread of this documentary is provided by renowned entomologist Douglas Tallamy, Ph.D. whose research, books and lectures about the use of non-native plants in landscaping sound the alarm about habitat and species loss. Dr. Tallamy challenges the notion that humans are here and nature is someplace else. Tallamy says, “It doesn’t have to and shouldn’t be that way.”

This event will be held from 7-9 pm on Tuesday, May 9, in the large lecture room at Cary Memorial Library. Light refreshments will be provided following the screening.
