Valley Roots Series: History of Restlawn Cemetery and its Inhabitants
Saturday June 16, 2018
3:00 PM until 5:00 PM
Join us at the McAllen Public Library as Jillian Glantz presents on the History of Restlawn Cemetery. Located in Edinburg, Texas, it is thought to be the only African American cemetery in Hidalgo County. It's not known when the first burial occurred, but there are people buried there born in the slavery era. Thanks to oral histories conducted by Valerie Ramirez, the little known history of Restlawn and its inhabitants have been preserved. Her presentation will include information and stories about many of the people buried there, as well as the impact they had on the black community in the Valley, and their interactions with the Hispanic community. She will also speak on the efforts to preserve Restlawn Cemetery and what it took to get the site a historical marker. Registration required at www.mcallenlibrary.net. Max.180
