Event: The Fashion of Jane Austen's World

Saturday April 8, 2017
2:00 PM until 3:00 PM

Jane Austen Era Fashion!

The social, technological, and political changes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were reflected in the notable evolution of women and men’s clothing. This program explores the many changes that occurred throughout Jane Austen’s life and how these changes influenced “fashion.”This presentation will look at what was fashionable - real or otherwise, helping us to more fully understand how Miss Austen used fashion to help define her characters.

~~Susan J. Jerome is the Collections Manager at the University of Rhode Island Historic Textile and Costume Collection. She has previously presented at the Avon Library on the fashion of Downton Abbey.
Susan earned her MS degree from URI’s Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design. She is also a principal at CT Quilt Works, focusing on textile conservation and quilt art. Prior to continuing her education, she worked for a number of years at Mystic Seaport Museum. Ms. Jerome also works as a consultant to museums and historical societies. An avid textilian, she is happiest when writing, talking and doing all things textile.
