Birds of Enchantment : Birding Puerto Rico
Speaker: Jaan Lepson
Puerto Rico is the smallest and easternmost of the Greater Antilles islands. Captured from Spain in 1898, Puerto Rico became a self-governing U. S. Commonwealth in 1952. The island blends traditional Latino-Caribbean and North American culture and, with its good infrastructure and widespread (though by no means universal) understanding of English, makes for an excellent introduction to birding in the Caribbean. Jaan visited Puerto Rico several times since 2007 and had the pleasure of working at the Rio Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico during the spring of 2012. His presentation will concentrate on birding in different habitats in Puerto Rico, along with a dash of the local flavor.
