Event: Over the Top!: Derry's Soldiers and Marines in the Great War

Wednesday April 12, 2017
6:30 PM until 8:00 PM

TJ Cullinane speaks!

April 6, 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of America’s entry into World War One. Over 300 Derry men and women would serve in the “Great War for Civilization.” They would deploy along the Mexican Border, at strategic locations in the Panama Canal Zone and sail to Europe as part of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.). Performing duties as diverse as searchlight operator, cartridge maker, and balloon crewman, all too many would fall to German machine gun fire, heavy artillery and gas shells on the green fields of France. Drawing almost exclusively from primary research material uncovered in the Derry History Museum and DPL New Hampshire Room, local historian T.J. Cullinane will break down the town’s involvement in the war in a three-part series. Part One will discuss the Army and Marines, with Part Two covering the Naval Services. The third and final talk will shed light on seven Derry men who opted to serve “King and Country” by joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Heavily illustrated with seldom seen photos and artifacts, the series will bring to light the long-forgotten bravery and sacrifices of Derry men and women in the cataclysmic event that many thought would be the “war to end all wars.”
