Wednesday July 19, 2017
6:30 PM until 8:00 PM
Love Game of Thrones? Excited for the new season? Come celebrate and hear about the inspiration for the wars of Westeros!
Presented by Mike Glaeser- University of Sheffield, England
Henry VI, a well-meaning but misguided king, sits on the throne of England. He is manipulated by his family and council who seek to further their own agendas. Rival nobles are overlooked for positions and sent on missions that are political exile in all but name. After enduring years of inept rule and the loss of French territories, the nobility of England split into a tangled web of political alliances favoring one of two royal houses- Lancaster or York. As the historical inspiration behind Game of Thrones, the Wars of the Roses drag England into the early modern era through vicious and bloody dynastic conflict.
This lecture will address the origins of the conflict and determine if either side had a legitimate grievance and firm claim to the throne. We will also explore the etymology and identify when and why the wars actually ended. Artifacts, arms, and armor will be on display as well. Who will you support- the white rose, or the red?
Location: Meeting Room A & B
