AGING IN PLACE - the 2017 One Book One Town Series
Dr. Gawande is the author of Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End and is the keynote speaker at a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Beacon Hill Village and the Village Movement held at the Boston Public Library.
Nauset Neighbors, an all-volunteer village serving Eastham, Wellfleet, Orleans, Harwich, Brewster and Chatham, along with the Eastham Public Library, will sponsore a simulcast from the new WGBH studio at the Boston Public Library. Dr. Gawande will be speaking from the Boston Public library, and the live program is hosted by Beacon Hill Village. The simulcast will be sponsored by the Village to Village network, with Villages all over the country hosting their own events.
Gawande's book describes people's efforts to maintain autonomy as they as they age in the face of ingrained habits, cultural expectations and one-size-fits-all corporate offerings. Gawande described his parents' successes and failures in achieving autonomy and his own successes and failures as he tried to help them.
"Being Mortal" is the Library's 2017 One Book One Town selection. Copies of the book will be available for patrons to borrow. he Library is planning an entire series of programming on "Aging in Place" over the next six months (listed below).
February 13, 2017 also marks the completion of the sixth year of operation of Nauset Neighbors, whose mission is to help seniors remain in their homes and stay active in our community for as long as possible. Nauset Neighbor's volunteers providing a caring service that makes it easy for seniors to get rides to appointments, expand their contacts with others, and get help with some of the complexity in their lives.

4:45 PM. Brief remarks about the program, Nauset Neighbors, and cohost activities
5:00 PM. Simulcast starts.
6:00 PM Simulcast ends. Local discussion and/or informal conversation.
Dr. Gawande will be taking questions from the wider audience. The sponsors have asked that if people have them in advance, they should forward them. Questions will be collected in writing during the talk and emailed to the sponsors.
