Russia: A Composer’s Revolution
presented in an open conversation recital format
Lying in the east, for many years beyond the reach of western classical harmonies, Russia waited for the right moment to make its debut upon the European musical scene. When it finally did, an explosion of composers brought Russia to the forefront of the European tradition with a passion and genius that still shines brightly today. Tchaikovsky was the first and guiding light of a new voice that merged western forms with a distinctly Russian flair for raw, unbridled emotion. Soon followed the composer-pianist pair of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, classmates and rivals whose works rise to the summit of pianistic perfection. Stravinsky later changed everything music could be, leading the forefront of the avant-garde with a music that shocked and amazed audiences, and even provoked a riot in Paris! Russia still remains “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma,” but Masterwork Conversations will get to the center of this musical matryoshka doll!
Pianists Matthew Harrison and Vlada Yaneva have been bringing Masterwork Conversations to audiences since their inaugural Chopin series in 2010. Their performances have taken them from stages in Europe to Carnegie Hall to the airwaves of WQXR, and the Wall Street Journal has featured Mr. Harrison’s article on Grieg: “Norwegian Soul Laid Bare.” Their open conversation recital format has brought new musical insight and enjoyment to audiences of every age and experience. In 2015 they released their debut CD, The Imagination of the Folk.
