“Is today the day?”
If shelter dogs could understand why they’re away from home, in a kennel, that is what they would ask. They don’t know they’re being kept warm, safe, and fed after being lost, abandoned, or surrendered by owners unfit or unable to care for them. They don’t know they’re being vaccinated, trained, and spayed/neutered to prepare them for a new home where they will again experience the love they lost.
The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter and its non-profit partner The Shelter Connection work together to improve the lives of the dogs you see here and many like them. Unlike private shelters, municipal facilities take all homeless dogs– no matter if they’re old, blind, deaf, missing limbs, or traumatized. Municipal shelters do not reject dogs that may be hard to place. This is where cooperation between the shelter and The Shelter Connection comes in.
No dog that can be saved will be put down. Fundraising by The Shelter Connection pays for medical procedures not covered by the Town budget. Since 2006, that money has also saved the lives of 683 dogs from overpopulated local shelters by bringing them to our shelter– dogs that might have otherwise been euthanized for lack of space.
The photographs in this exhibit were taken to celebrate the dogs, the staff, and the volunteers who believe there is a “forever home” for every shelter dog. That home could be yours. Is today the day?
