The Green Road is the thoroughfare that connects the properties of the Madigan and Considine families in County Clare, Ireland. It is the road Pat Madigan traveled as he courted Rosaleen Considine. Pat and Rosaleen married and had four children--Dan, Emmet, Hanna, and Constance. Rosaleen, dramatic and difficult, has been a constant source of criticism and tension in her children's lives. All are now grown and have moved away from home. Dan considered the priesthood for a time, but ended up in New York where he finally acknowledged his homosexuality. Emmet is in Africa, trying to help famine victims. Hanna has a drinking problem and a disappointing acting career. Constance is married and lives in Limerick. Now, in the 1990s, the widowed Rosaleen has decided it's time to sell the family house. The Madigan siblings return to County Clare to spend one final Christmas together in their childhood home.
