Betty Friedan’s “Feminine Mystique” (1963) became a best seller, leading to NOW and efforts for gender equality. Gloria Steinem from her time as an “undercover” reporter at the “Playboy Club” to a founder of “Ms.” urged more radical directions for women’s liberation, arguing who wants to be equal to men when males are far from ideal role models.
