A DAY AT THE OPERA with Dr. Kolb: CARMEN
Tuesday April 11, 2017
Music by Georges Bizet; libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac
One of the ten most frequently produced operas over the past century, Carmen also pioneered a new approach to opera—one in which realism played a far greater role. Set in Seville in the early 19th Century, Carmen tells the story of an attractive Gypsy who works in a cigarette factory and is flirtatious with numerous men, including the young soldier, Don José and the toreador, Escamillo, among others. Tempers frequently flare, and a fickle love leads to a tragic ending when Don José loses Carmen to Escamillo.
