"Moving House" by Pawel Huell (Poland)
In Pawel Huell's story "Moving House" the reader is treated to the story of a young Polish boy who pays a visit to his German neighbor. Such a visit is forbidden to the boy, but the beautiful music played by the German Lady next door bewitches him. In Polish History, Germany became an aggressive and betraying neighbor while Russia offered salvation. Nevertheless, for Poles one's friends one day could easily be one's enemies the next.
"Cockroaches" by Bruno Schulz (Poland)
Bruno Schulz was one of the most remarkably gifted writers from Eastern Europe in the 20th century. Little known outside his native Poland, his work as been compared to Franz Kafka. This short story is typical of Schulz's genius and is included in the short story book The Street of Crocodiles.
