Event: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

Thursday April 27, 2017
7:00 PM until 9:00 PM

On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth committed what is one of the most infamous crimes in American history, when he shot President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Teatre in Washington D.C.  What were the circumstances that led up to this event?  Why was Booth determined to kill Lincoln?  How was this man able to get within a few feet of an American president without being detected?  Booth escaped from Washington that night and, despite a massive man hunt, was on the loose for 12 days.  It wasn't until April 26 that U.S, cavalrymen found him in a tobacco barn just north of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

As we all know Booth did not act alone.  In the days that followed his crime, the federal government brought to trial eight people who were part of the conspiracy.  On July 7, 1865, four of them were executed in the yard of the Old Capitol Prison in Washington D.C.  Major General Winfield S. Hancock and Major General John F. Hartranft, both from Norristown, played key roles in their execution.

This series will meet Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: April 6, 13, 20 and 27.  The registration fee is $60.00.
