Supporting English Learners in Specialty Subjects & Support Services:
Building Academic Language and Competencies of ELLs

Description:  Participants will: 

  • Analyze the Academic Language of the appropriate Specialist teaching areas (text/speech) depicting specific features of English as outlined in the WIDA© Standards and identify typical features for the talk, text and tasks from the classroom. 
  • Adapt an appropriate classroom/presentation text to reflect varying linguistic complexity as outlined in the WIDA© Standards for ELLs at varying levels of English proficiency. 
  • Practice, reflect upon and provide feedback related to modeled instructional strategies practiced in the Specialist’s classroom setting to develop ELLs’ Academic Language across the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. 
  • Monitor their growth in their understanding of practices related to developing ELLs’ command of academic by participating in a pre and post-course self-evaluation survey.

Audience: Teachers of Art, Music, theater, Physical Education, Health/Wellness, Computers/Technology, Foreign Language, and Support Staff including Guidance Counselors, Librarians, Nurses, Speech Pathologists, and Technologists 

Presenter: Anne Dolan, MATSOL, has years of experience as an ELL teacher, professor, and MATSOL trainer. Anne is a member of the MATSOL team selected by DESE to provide local WIDA training, and has been involved in every level of implementation of WIDA at the state level. 

Registration Fee: FREE for districts included in NRC's Title III Consortium Grant. (NRC, Abington, Avon, Bridgewater-Raynham, East Bridgewater, Hanover, Norwell, Rockland, West Bridgewater, Whitman-Hanson)
                            $299 non-member districts, if space is available. 

Hours/PDPs: 15 PDPs including online component and outside work between sessions 
Graduate Credit: Optional 1 Graduate credit available through Fitchburg State University for an additional fee; arrangements made at the first session.
Register by: December 22, 2017. Register online through your school district’s SmartPD link to the Collaborative offerings, through NRC’s SmartPD at www.northrivercollaborative.org on the PD webpage, or by fax.
The first 25 seats are prioritized for staff from NRC Title III Consortium district staff.
Registrations from other districts may be shifted to the waiting list if space is not available.
