Mandated Training on the Basic Concepts and Steps to Implement the Massachusetts Model System

Description:  This training provides an introduction to the key components of the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation Framework, the evaluation rubric, and preparation to engage in the 5-Step Evaluation Cycle. The training includes the DESE mandated components and provides structured time for analysis and planning. 
  • The Orientation describes the purpose of the educator evaluation framework, the two ratings everyone will receive, the 5-step evaluation cycle, and key characteristics of the evaluation rubric.
  • The Review of Performance Rubrics (i.e., teacher or SISP as appropriate) includes the basic structure and terminology of the rubrics and examines indicators/elements across the four standards.
  • Next participants engage in Self Assessment (Step 1), examining key characteristics of a high-quality self-assessment, and have an opportunity to begin their own self-assessments.
  • Then participants engage the development of S.M.A.R.T. Goals (Step 2) related to student learning goals and professional practice goals that are S.M.A.R.T. with clear benchmarks for success.
  • Finally, the fourth workshop on Gathering Evidence introduces the three types of evidence required in an evaluation, and provides tips and strategies for determining high quality artifacts of practice and measures of student learning.

Audience: School-level educators without evaluator responsibilities, such as classroom teachers and specialized instructional support personnel (SISP), who are new to the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation System and haven’t received the mandated training.

Presenter: Dr. Scott Borstel, Teaching, Learning, & Leading Consulting, LLC. An experienced educator and district/school administrator, Dr. Scott Borstel has expertise in all areas of administration including educator evaluation and supervision, effective teaching and learning, designing and facilitating quality professional development, and management systems. Previously the Superintendent in Marshfield, Scott is currently an Associate Professor at Johnson & Wales University in Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership.
