Session: 19-354701

Description: This course is designed for central office administrators, principals, and team leaders (grades K–8) to provide them with the knowledge and skills to lead their educators’ professional practice in integrating a universal approach to social emotional learning (SEL) for all students. School leaders will establish a tiered system of behavioral intervention and support which is based on current research on child development and the impact of trauma on learning.  These school-wide systems will integrate instructional and behavioral strategies that improve academic and social-emotional outcomes for all students. Participants will learn how to improve educators’ ability to identify students’ social, emotional and behavioral needs, and will understand how social and emotional skills are integral to academic success.

The course explores the research on the impact of social and emotional learning on academic outcomes, and the role of engagement as a key factor in promoting social and emotional learning to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds including students with disabilities. Research indicates that students who do not have skill sets to build and maintain relationships, to regulate the behaviors that enable them to participate in the curriculum, and to be socially and self-aware, are unable to reach their academic potential (Elias, 2012).

Topics:

  • Introduction to social/emotional skills promoting positive behavior and academic success
  • Developing a multi-tiered system of response
  • Applying social emotional learning to curriculum frameworks
  • Exploring academic and non-academic measures for improving outcomes when working with traumatized children
  • Integrating effective skill development to ameliorate challenges of social and emotional disadvantages
  • Developing an integrated approach to SEL for students with disabilities
  • Building resilience and positive emotional development

Audience: Central Office Administrators, Building Principals, Team Leaders in Grades K-8.
The expectation is that participants will have a basic understanding about the importance of social emotional learning
in schools and a multi-tiered system of support. The course is designed to improve educators’ professional practice in integrating a universal approach to social emotional learning for all students.
