Women's History Month for Kids: We Weave, We Strike!
Wednesday March 22, 2017
6:00 PM until 7:00 PM
Women’s History is right in our backyard. Come to the library to hear about the first ever women’s labor strike of 1824 that involved the female workers of Slater Mill in Pawtucket. At that time, the women workers were told they were going to get a decrease in their pay AND longer work hours. The female mill workers didn't think it was fair, so they decided to organize as a group and strike! Kathryn Migliaccio, from Slater Mill, will guide the kids through a hands on weaving activity, share what it was like to work in a mill, read Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel, illustrated by Melissa Sweet, and then act out a real strike. Best for kids ages 8-12.
