Jazz Prodigy Concert: Caelan Cardello
Wednesday October 11, 2017
The Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum are proud to support Berkshire Jazz Week.
17 year old Caelan Cardello started playing the piano at the age of 5, and got hooked on jazz via Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown oeuvre. He was completely transfixed by the groove and swing potential and harmonic content. And so began his love affair with Jazz. Caelan is the featured pianist in both the award-winning Jazz House Big Band and small group ensemble, the Ambassadors. Through these affiliations, Caelan has had the opportunity to play with a who's who of jazz greats: Christian McBride, Jerome Jennings, Freddie Hendrix, Abraham Burton, Gary Smulyan, Marcus Printup, Maria Schnieder, Paquito D'Rivera, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Vincent Gardner, Lou Donaldson, Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis and Gary Bartz. Outside of the Jazz House family, Caelan has performed with/for Brad Mehldau, Cyrus Chestnut, Fred Hersch, Conrad Herwig, Kenny Rampton, Charles Tolliver, Mike Richmond and Martin Wind. Now under the mentorship of jazz piano legend Fred Hersch, Caelan has been introduced to the "mind bending" and far reaching harmonic/melodic possibilities of the instrument. He has appeared at the Blue Note and Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca Cola with the Jazz House Big Band and in New Jersey at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). He received the Outstanding Soloist Awards, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington Festivals in 2015 and 2016, and the 2016 Jazz House Kids Award for outstanding musicianship. A Member of the National Society of High School Scholars, Caelan is currently a senior at Teaneck High School.
