Event: Children's Author Will Hillenbrand

Thursday April 21, 2016
10:00 AM until 11:00 AM

We are so excited to announce that children’s author and illustrator Will Hillenbrand will be at the Whitehall Library as part of Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child Initiative.

Kite Day is this year’s book selection for One Book, Every Young Child. Celebrating its 11th year, this is a collaborative project using the vehicle of a “One Book, One State” program to highlight the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers ages 3-6 years. In its inaugural year, the One Book, Every Young Child program won the coveted national John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award.
Published in 2012 by Holiday House, this story is about two friends, Mole and Bear, who decide to make a kite and find themselves on a windy-day adventure.

By making this reading a family event, parents and caregivers will not only enjoy sharing a story experience with their preschooler, but they will also have the opportunity to learn more about the One Book, Every Young Child initiative.
Studies show that activities like reading aloud and sharing books and stories are crucial to early learning. Adults must find ways to engage children in activities like talking about a book's cover and illustrations, discussing the action in the book and favorite parts, pretend play related to the book and more. Through One Book, Every Young Child, adults with preschoolers in their lives will learn how they can support the development of literacy in preschool children.

This event is free and open to the public. To learn more about the One Book, Every Young Child initiative, visit www.paonebook.org.

One Book, Every Young Child is made possible through a collaboration of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Please Touch Museum, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Library Association, Pennsylvania Center for the Book, Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children, Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children and The Pennsylvania Child Care Association. This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Join us for this special event! Each child in attendance will receive a free signed copy of the book. Activities will include crafts, snacks, and games. Registration is required.
