Event: Voices from the Attic:A Chat with Dr. Carleton Young

Thursday July 14, 2016
1:00 PM

It's time to celebrate the fourteenth of July!

Join the library for a program that explores how the most dangerous time in America can be better understood through the power of the written word.

Imagine clearing out your family attic and discovering hundreds of letters written during the Civil War. This is exactly what happened to local professor Carleton Young.

The result of this discovery is Voices from the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War. The book tells the story of two brothers who witnessed and made history by fighting in many important battles including Antietam, Cedar Creek, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

Rediscovered more than a century after being written, these letters offer a fascinating and fresh insight into the war as seen through the eyes of two young men who came of age at the same time their country almost broke apart.

Bio: Carleton Young has undergraduate degrees in economics and English from Westminster College and Point Park University, an MA in history from Ohio University, and his PhD in the history of education from the University of Pittsburgh. He has taught classes as an adjunct professor at the Community College of Allegheny County, the University of Pittsburgh, Eastern Gateway Community College, and in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
