An Ice Age Odyssey: The Pope Mastodon’s Epic Journey
Tuesday April 11, 2017
7:00 PM until 8:00 PM
*** Rescheduled from Tuesday, March 14 ***
From 1913 – when workmen digging a ditch on the Hill-Stead estate of A.A. Pope in Farmington uncovered the remains of a mastodon – to today, when a successful radiocarbon date on a tusk fragment was conducted indicating that “Old Longtooth” passed away about 14,500 years ago, Brian Jones, CT’s State Archaeologist, presents the epic journey of the Pope Mastodon and his (or her) continuing importance to understanding Connecticut’s ancient environment and history. Dr. Jones is associated with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History at UConn. He has worked as an archaeologist since 1992 and received his Ph.D. in Anthropology at UConn in 1998. He leads a busy life in Glastonbury with his wife and two children. Seating is limited, so registration is requested online or at the Reference Desk at 860-652-7720.
