About Us

Our History (UCC Norwell)

The Norwell UCC church began when a small group of twenty people met in the summer of 1965.  A member of the conference came to visit the small group, and his advice was to have another meeting: if more people came, keep meeting, he said.  If fewer people come, maybe this isn't your time.

Well, it was.  By the following summer, the new church was chartered.  It rented the former Universalist church in Assinnippi, across from what was then Sargents restaurant (now Trattoria San Peitro). The first service was held in October of that year.  By December of that year the Reverend Emmanuel Hedgebeth had answered the call of the small church.  Within three years, the church had built the initial building at its current location on Main Street, but in 1969, Mr. Hedgebeth left for a pastorate in Woburn.  A young and energetic David Norling came to Norwell to lead the growing church for nearly 20 years, overseeing the doubling of the physical church and an even greater increase in membership, mission and vision.  Associate Pastor Judy McCullough led the church from David Norling's departure in 1988 until 1992.  In May, 1994, the Reverend Rochelle (Shelly) Stackhouse joined the church for a five year stay, and recently moved to New Jersey so that her husband Gavin could pursue his career dreams.

The search for a new pastor can be a lengthy affair, often lasting two years or longer.  But timing is everything.  As UCC Norwell began its search, the Reverend S. Chapin Garner was working to finish his own search from an Associate position for the Wellesley UCC church for a permanent home.  The rest as we say, is history.

Our Mission

The mission of UCC Norwell shall be to bind together the followers of Jesus Christ for the purpose of sharing in the worship of God, and in making his will dominant in the lives of men and women, youth and children, individually and collectively, especially as that will is set forth in the life, teachings, death and living presence of Jesus Christ.  We are an independent Christian Family living life in Christ's love and wisdom.  >

We seek to embrace the world with care and love, as taught by Jesus through the Good-News he brought us. We work toward the promise that there shall be peace on earth and joy in this life as well as the next. We share the glory that is the Holy Spirit. We pray that all people may feel the grace of God. We teach the word that someday through Christ's wisdom we will be one with God.
