Thu, Mar 18, 2010 -- Tech Services Roundtable

The Tech Services roundtable addresses all aspects of the technical services field. Discussion items so far: how Tech Services has changed/will change in these lean years at each of our libraries; the future of WMRLS and the other Mass regions; whether there will be changes in MARLS and what we can or should do; how libraries assign call numbers (Who uses the suggested call number from the MARC record? Do libraries have local traditions which are used instead of suggested Dewey numbers? What we do when there isn't a suggested call number or other clue?); and a demo of WebDewey. Come and meet your colleagues, share your questions, and learn about the state of the profession. Carolyn Platt, Jones Library, will moderate the discussion.

Program snow date is Wednesday, March 24.

Location: WMRLS

Are they just Christian Fiction? No sex, no drugs, no Rock ‘n Roll? Who reads this stuff? ‘Gentle Readers’ are still a significant portion of our clientele. How do Readers’ Advisors learn which titles will comfort and which will distress? Join our live online continuing education coffee break discussing Gentle Reads! This week's WMRLS CE Coffee Break focuses upon finding comfortable titles with gentle pacing and content that readers will enjoy. We’ll review the characteristics of this grouping that crosses most genre lines. Jan Resnick, WMRLS Assistant Regional Administrator, is the discussion leader. Leane Ellis, Readers’ Advisor at the Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield, and Mary Behrle, NMRLS, will join us online.

Location: Online Continuing Education Course
