Play will be in two divisions:
Kindergarten - 4th
5th - 8th
The top two winners in each division will receive a trophy and the winner from each division will be invited to play in the county-wide tournament at Brentwood Library on March 31st.

For children in grades K-8. Session runs from January 7 to February 11, with a tournament on Saturday, February 18 from 1-3 p.m. Participants must attend at least 4 Saturday noon sessions to be eligible for the Saturday afternoon tournament. Beginners and experienced players are welcome. Players receive half-an-hour of play and half-an-hour of strategy instruction from instructor Eric Berthoud. The annual Chess Tournament will be held in the meeting rooms on the lower level of the library. It is open to children from kindergarten through the eighth grade who live in Allegheny County. Trophies will be awarded to winners in several age groups. Winners will advance to the county-wide Tournament in March. Chess sets and boards will be provided. Advance registration is required. All beginning and experienced players in Grades K-8 are eligible for our Annual Chess Tournament. There will two categories---Grades K-4 (from 1:30-3:00 p.m.) and Grades 5-8 (from 3:30-5:00 p.m.). First and second place winners in each category will receive a trophy. First place winners in each category qualify for the County-Wide Chess Tournament.
