Free showing of FOOD, INC.
FOOD, INC. is a compelling fiml about our nation's food industry. It opens your eyes to the overwhelming power of corporations on our food supply, health, environment and the lives of farmers and industry workers. As the filmmaker explains, "We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli-the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults."
The documentary includes interviews with Eric Schlosser (Fast Food nationa), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's manifesto)and social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Slatin. We hope to include activites for younger children in the Children's programming room as well.

Gender Stereotyping with Kara Kaufman
Early to mid American 20th century advertising methodology defines gender roles, yesterday and today. In this lecture Kara Kaufman explores male and female gender roles in the methods advertisers employed in the early to mid 20th century to sell items coming off the assembly lines and how they ingrained what it meant to be a "real" man or "real" woman. Has anything changed?
