Non-Fiction Book Club
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Come and join us for our Non-Fiction Book Club! This month's selection is Evergreen Award nominee, The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King.

Rich with dark and light, pain and magic, The Inconvenient Indian distills the insights gleaned from Thomas King's critical and personal meditation on what it means to be "Indian" in North America, weaving the curiously circular tale of the relationship between non-Natives and Natives in the centuries since the two first encountered each other. In the process, King refashions old stories about historical events and figures, takes a sideways look at film and pop culture, relates his own complex experiences with activism, and articulates a deep and revolutionary understanding of the cumulative effects of ever-shifting laws and treaties on Native peoples and lands. This is a book both timeless and timely, burnished with anger but tempered by wit, and ultimately a hard-won offering of hope--a sometimes inconvenient but nonetheless indispensable account for all of us, Indian and non-Indian alike, seeking to understand how we might tell a new story for the future.

All of our nonfiction book club selections are available in alternate formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternate format please speak to the book club coordinators.

Registration is required.  To register click on the green button below, call 905 668-6531 x.2020 or email askreference@whitbylibrary.on.ca.

Culturally Culinary
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Ontario, being one of the largest multi-cultural regions globally is privileged with a diverse population and a wealth of cultural experiences waiting to be explored. The problem is that many people are reluctant to step out of their own cultural niche and one of those reasons is simply a lack of knowledge.
Culturally Culinary helps to bridge that gap by introducing unfamiliar foods from different cultures in the hope that participants will feel comfortable in expanding their supermarket choices. A variety of foods will be introduced, and methods of preparation, nutritional value and in some cases samples may be made available.

Non-Fiction Book Club
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Come and join us for our Non-Fiction Book Club! This month's selection is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh's sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer. Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie's birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects.

All of our nonfiction book club selections are available in alternate formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternate format please speak to the book club coordinators.

Registration is required.  To register click on the green button below, call 905 668-6531 x.2020 or email askreference@whitbylibrary.on.ca.

Non-Fiction Book Club
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Come and join us for our Non-Fiction Book Club! This month's selection is Evergreen Award nominee, The Massey Murder by Charlotte Gray.

In February 1915, a member of one of Canada’s wealthiest families was shot and killed on the front porch of his home in Toronto as he was returning from work. Carrie Davies, an 18-year-old domestic servant, quickly confessed. But who was the victim here? Charles “Bert” Massey, a scion of a famous family, or the frightened, perhaps mentally unstable Carrie, a penniless British immigrant? When the brilliant lawyer Hartley Dewart, QC, took on her case, his grudge against the powerful Masseys would fuel a dramatic trial that pitted the old order against the new, wealth and privilege against virtue and honest hard work. Set against a backdrop of the Great War in Europe and the changing faceof a nation, this sensational crime is brought to vivid life for the first time.

All of our nonfiction book club selections are available in alternate formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternate format please speak to the book club coordinators.

Non-Fiction Book Club
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Come and join us for our Non-Fiction Book Club! This month's selection is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home. What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

All of our nonfiction book club selections are available in alternate formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternate format please speak to the book club coordinators.
