An Evening with Suzanne Kingsmill @ Central
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

November Noir, our annual celebration of Canadian mystery writers, has returned to the Whitby Central Library.

This year we are thrilled to welcome Suzanne Kingsmill, author of the Cordi O’Callaghan mysteries, on November 27. Fans of mysteries, animals and adventure will not want to miss this evening!

In her most recent outing, Dying for Murder, zoologist Cordi O’Callaghan is looking forward to a relaxing birdsong study on an island off the coast of South Carolina. But trouble tends to follow Cordi. She finds herself drawn into a mystery when the director of the research station ends up dead.

Kingsmill herself has led a pretty interesting life. She has survived, among other things, being trapped in the ocean by a shark, sleeping with a rattlesnake and being treed by a coyote!

She has a B.A in English literature, a B.Sc. in biology and a M.Sc. in zoology. In addition to her mystery series she has authored numerous magazine articles and four non-fiction books.

Hosted by Susanna Kearsley, author of bestselling novel The Winter Sea and The Firebird, the event begins at 7 p.m.

Books will be available for purchase through Blue Heron Books.

The event is free however registration is required.

Non-Fiction Book Club
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Come and join us for our Non-Fiction Book Club! This month's selection is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home. What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

All of our nonfiction book club selections are available in alternate formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternate format please speak to the book club coordinators.

Registration is required.  To register click on the green button below, call 905 668-6531 x.2020 or email askreference@whitbylibrary.on.ca.
