The Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore At Central
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Canada has lost much of its railway heritage. Across the country stations have been bulldozed and rails ripped up. Once the heart of communities, stations and tracks have left little more than a gaping hole in Canada's landscapes. Join author Ron Brown and revisit the times when railways were the country's economic lifeline, and the station the social centre. The landscapes which grew around the station are also explored and include such forgotten features as station hotels, restaurants, gardens and the once common railway YMCA. Although most have vanished, the book celebrates the survival of that heritage in stations which have been saved or, like Whitby’s station remain in use.

Building an Ageless Mind at Central
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The brain, our ability to think, and our self-concept are so very important to individual lives, and the desire to maintain robust cognitive function is the ultimate goal for anyone concerned about the aging mind. Lifestyle strategies to promote brain health are becoming more prevalent in our society, but understanding what really works and why and how we need to engage in certain activities, as well as what effects one can expect is still not clearly layout for the population. Thus, Dr. Tippett will highlight in his presentation the best strategies for building an ageless mind, with evidence from current research. In addition in his presentation Dr. Tippett will also examine one of the most profound brain aging related illnesses of our time, Alzheimer's disease, and provide detailed information on how this disease affects the individual, and ways to protect against it, and to alter its course even if it's been diagnosed. Better brain health is possibly for all aging individuals and by following a few guidelines one can expect to see improvements or maintained ability as they age.

Non-Fiction Book Club at Central
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us for the Non-Fiction Book Club. This month's selection is Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton.

Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty fierce, hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Above all she sought family, particularly the thrill and the magnificence of the one from her childhood that, in her adult years, eluded her. Hamilton's ease and comfort in a kitchen were instilled in her at an early age when her parents hosted grand parties, often for more than one hundred friends and neighbours. The smells of spit-roasted lamb, apple wood smoke, and rosemary garlic marinade became as necessary to her as her own skin. Blood, Bones & Butter follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; the soulless catering factories that helped pay the rent; Hamilton's own kitchen at Prune, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton's idyllic past and her own future family---the result of a difficult and prickly marriage that nonetheless yields rich and lasting dividends.

All of our non-fiction book club selections are available in alternative formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternative format, please speak with the book club coordinator.

Your Water Footprint with author Stephen Leahy
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

That morning cup of coffee required 140 liters (37 gallons) of water before it found its way to your table—water that was used to grow, process and ship the coffee beans. When we spend money on food, clothes, cellphones or even electricity, we are buying water— a shockingly large amount of water.

Join author Stephen Leahy and learn what Your Water Footprint reveals and how water is essential to our way of life in ways we never imagined.

Non-Fiction Book Club at Central
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us for the Non-Fiction Book Club. This month's selection is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed.

Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State--and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

All of our non-fiction book club selections are available in alternative formats (eg. audiobook). If you require an alternative format, please speak with the book club coordinator.
