Meet Sy Montgomery, author and naturalist
Sy Montgomery will introduce her Willard Brook friends to some of her teachers--including shamans, orangutans, tigers, tarantulas and snakes.
Her wild career--swimming in the Amazon with pink dolphins, searching for signs of snow leopards in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia's Gobi, working in a pit with 18,000 snakes--has unfolded because of her single talent: she has learned to recognize the teachers all around us, whether they have two legs, four, six, eight--or in the case of the snakes, one. Her talk and accompanying images will introduce folks to some of the teachers who have helped her, and discuss how we can begin to find them and learn to listen for truth.

We will be reading and talking about *Charming Bill* by Alice McDermott. Pick up your copy of the book at the library. When Billy, the glue of a tight Irish community in New York, dies as a result of lifelong alcohol abuse, mourners gather around roast beef and green bean amandine to tell tales and ruminate on his struggle for happiness after he lost his first love, Eva. With carefully drawn character studies and gentle probing, McDermott, who won the National Book Award for this work, masterfully weaves a subtle but tenacious web of relationships to explore the devastation of alcoholism, the loss of innocence, the daily practice of love, and the redeeming unity of family and friendship.
