Book Club Express FAQs

What is Book Club Express (BCE)?

In support of book clubs, Douglas County Libraries offers to our patrons a service called Book Club Express. We use BCE Reserve to manage our Book Club Express kits. Each kit may include multiple copies of a book, author biographies, book reviews, author interviews, and discussion questions. Adult kits always contain eight copies of the book. Juvenile and young adult kits may have anywhere from eight to twenty copies of the book. All of our kits are housed at the Highlands Ranch Library.

Who can use BCE?

Any Douglas County Library patron who has a valid Douglas County library card can use BCE.  However, keep in mind that BCE kits are only for book clubs.

How Does This Work?

How do I find and reserve a BCE kit?

Go to the DCL website: DouglasCountyLibraries.org, and click “BCE Reserve”. You will see options to view all titles in the collection, to reserve by title, or to see what kits are available in a given month. Additionally, you can always ask a staff member at any branch or at our Contact Center (303-791-7323) to assist you with reserving a kit.

How do I choose my reservation date?

Since BCE kits check out for six weeks, we recommend that you schedule a pickup date one or two days before your group meeting. This allows time for book distribution, reading, discussion, and return of the kit the following month. For example, your club is meeting on March 15th and would like to discuss The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Make your reservation for March 14th. The kit checks out six weeks from the pickup date, making your due date April 24th. At your group's April meeting, you will discuss The Help and your facilitator will collect the books to be returned by the April 24th due date.

Can I reserve a kit for immediate pickup?

Yes. First place your reservation in BCE Reserve using today’s date. Then call our Contact Center (303-791-7323) to have the kit pulled. If you are picking up your kit at a location other than the Highlands Ranch Library, it may take about three days for your kit to arrive at your branch.

Why won’t BCE Reserve allow me to place a particular kit on reserve?

If BCE Reserve is not allowing you to place a specific kit on reserve, it may be because that kit is already on reserve for someone else during all or part of your reservation period.

What if I do not have an email account and want to reserve a kit?

When filling out the kit reservation form, click “Unavailable.” Make certain to enter a valid telephone number so that we have a way to contact you.

How do I see what kits I have reserved?

To see what kits you have reserved, click on the “My Kits” link on the main page. You will be prompted to enter your library card barcode and PIN. Click the “Submit” button.  At the Library card verified screen, click the “Continue” button. You will see a list of your reservations. From this list, you can click on the “Show” button to see the details of each reservation.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

How do I cancel a reservation?

Click on the “My Kits” link on the main BCE Reserve page. You will be prompted to enter your library card barcode and PIN. Click the “Submit” button.  At the Library card verified screen, click the “Continue” button. You will see a list of your reservations. From this list you can click on the “Delete” button to delete a reservation. You will then see a warning asking “Are you sure you want to cancel this kit reservation?" Choose “OK” or “Cancel.”

My hold for a kit expired – what can I do about it?

Kits stay on the hold shelf for six days. Once a hold expires, the kit is no longer available for you. You may attempt to place the request again using BCE reserve. Repeated expired holds may result in the loss of BCE borrowing privileges.

How will I know when my kit has arrived at my pickup location?

Most patrons will receive email notification. Those who do not have email will receive a phone call. Please do not come to your branch to pick up your BCE kit until you receive notification that your kit has arrived.

How far in advance can I book a kit?

One year from the current date.

How many kits can I reserve?

Each book club may use one BCE kit at a time. Clubs are permitted to check out a second kit shortly before their meeting to allow for distribution of the second kit of books at the same meeting.

What if I don’t return my kit on time or the kit is incomplete?

  • BCE kits are checked out for six weeks and cannot be renewed
  • Due dates for kits cannot be extended
  • There is no grace period
  • Kits must be returned with ALL of the books and accompanying materials
  • Overdue fines on the kit are $1.00 per day
  • Missing or damaged books or guides cost $10.00 each. If you return a missing item within one year from the original pickup date, $5.00 will be waived or refunded.
  • Lost or damaged kits will incur a $140.00 charge
  • Repeated violations of the above restrictions may result in loss of BCE borrowing privileges

Can I return a kit to any branch?

Yes, you can return the kit to any Douglas County Library branch service desk. Never place kits in the book drop. Do not return kits to any libraries outside of Douglas County.

Can anyone in my group pick up the kit?

Yes. That person will need to provide the name of the person who reserved the kit and the title being picked up or bring in a copy of the email notice that the kit is ready. However, the kit will be checked out on the account of the person who originally placed the reservation.

How do I change my contact information?

For any changes to your contact information or to change the contact person for a BCE reservation, please send an email to bce@dclibraries.org. In the email, please include your name, phone number, email address and any changes you are requesting

For additional help, any staff member at our branch would be happy to assist you. You may also call our Contact Center at 303-791-7323 or email us at bce@dclibraries.org.
