Book Club Express FAQs

What is Book Club Express (BCE)?

In support of book clubs, Douglas County Libraries offers to our customers a service called Book Club Express. We use BCE Reserve to manage our Book Club Express kits. Each kit contains ten copies of the book, author biographies, book reviews, author interviews, and discussion questions.  All of our kits are housed at the Philip S. Miller (Castle Rock) Library.

Who can use BCE?

Any Douglas County Library customer who has a valid Douglas County library card can use BCE.

How Does This Work?

How do I find and reserve a BCE kit?

Go to the DCL website: www.dcl.org, and click on the "Library Info" tab. A drop down menu appears and you will click on "Book Clubs". Click on the "Book Club Express"  link. You will see options to view all titles in the collection, to reserve by title, or to see what kits are available in a given month. This reservation system is called Kit Keeper Additionally, you can always ask a staff member at any branch or at our Contact Center (303-791-7323) to assist you with reserving a kit.

How do I choose my reservation date?

Since BCE kits check out for six weeks, we recommend that you schedule a pickup date one or two days before your group meeting. This allows time for book distribution, reading, discussion, and return of the kit the following month. For example, your club is meeting on March 15th and would like to discuss The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Make your reservation for March 14th. The kit checks out six weeks from the pickup date, making your due date April 24th. At your group's April meeting, you will discuss The Help and your facilitator will collect the books to be returned by the April 24th due date.

Can I reserve a kit for immediate pickup?

The BCE staff member is available weekday mornings. If you have questions, please contact our contact center at 303-791-7323.

How are BCE kits selected?

Douglas County Libraries orders popular fiction and nonfiction that is available in paperback. Additionally, we try to select books for which we can find pre-written discussion questions. Douglas County Libraries is adding book club kits all the time. Please visit our Book Club Express site to see what's new!

How can I suggest a book for BCE?

Email us at bce@dclibraries.org or ask a staff member to pass along your suggestion. Give us your contact information so we can get back to you.

Why won’t BCE Reserve allow me to place a particular kit on reserve?

If BCE Reserve is not allowing you to place a specific kit on reserve, it may be because that kit is already on reserve for someone else during all or part of your reservation period. Please note that you are not able to reserve a kit same day to allow time for processing of kits and for kits to travel to the branch libraries. If you have questions, please call the Contact Center at 303-791-7323.

What if I do not have an email account and want to reserve a kit?

When filling out the kit reservation form, click “Unavailable.” Make certain to enter a valid telephone number so that we have a way to contact you.

How do I see what kits I have reserved?

To see what kits you have reserved, click on the “My Kits” link on the main page. You will be prompted to enter your library card barcode and PIN. Click the “Submit” button.  At the Library card verified screen, click the “Continue” button. You will see a list of your reservations. My hold for a kit expired – what can I do about it?

Kits stay on the hold shelf for one week. Once a hold expires, the kit is no longer available for you. You may attempt to place the request again using BCE reserve.

How will I know when my kit has arrived at my pickup location?

Most patrons will receive email notification. Those who do not have email will receive a phone call. Please do not come to your branch to pick up your BCE kit until you receive notification that your kit has arrived.

How far in advance can I book a kit?

One year from the current date.

How many kits can I reserve?

Each book club may use one BCE kit at a time. Clubs are permitted to check out a second kit shortly before their meeting to allow for distribution of the second kit of books at the same meeting.

What if I don’t return my kit on time or the kit is incomplete?

  • BCE kits are checked out for six weeks and cannot be renewed.
  • Due dates for kits cannot be extended.
  • There is no grace period.
  • Contact bce@dclibraries.org if you have a missing or damaged book. Missing or damaged books cost $10 each, if the BCE Coordinator decides a replacement copy is necessary.
  • Lost or damaged kits will incur a $140.00 charge.
  • When you return an incomplete or late kit, the next group reserving the kit is impacted. If a kit is not returned within one week of the due date, future reservations may be cancelled.

What happens if the kit I requested it returned late by another book club?

If a kit you are waiting for is returned damaged or is not returned by the time you have requested it, BCE staff will contact you to offer alternative dates or alternative titles.

Can I return a kit to any branch?

Yes, you can return the kit to any Douglas County Library branch service desk. Never place kits in the book drop. Do not return kits to any libraries outside of Douglas County.

Can anyone in my group pick up the kit?
