Ivy Ling-1974- Meet Ivy! She lives in San Francisco, California in 1974 with her close-knit Chinese-American family. Ivy feels unlucky and invisible as the middle child in the family. She loves gymnastics and her family. When the All-City gymnastics tournament is set for the same day as the annual Ling family reunion, Ivy faces a tough choice. With the help of her brother Andrew, Ivy realizes she can take charge of her own life and make her own luck.

In 1824 New Mexico, located in the American Southwest, is part of Mexico. Tia Dolores comes to live with Josefina and her family after her mother dies. She brings new ideas and challenges to the ranch. Josefina loves learning to read, weave, and to play her aunt’s piano. By facing all these changes Josefina keeps her traditions and finds her courage.

Melody Ellison-1964- Meet Melody! She is an optimistic, enthusiastic girl growing up in Detroit, Michigan during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Melody wants to be a musician when she grows up. She loves singing and can’t wait to sing her first solo at church. When Melody experiences discrimination for herself, she decides to stand up and speak out about civil rights, too. As her solo approaches an unimaginable tragedy leaves her silent. With her family’s love and patience, Melody finds her voice and the strength to use it.
