History of VIA Rail: Canada's Passenger System

Via Rail operates 494 trains per week across eight Canadian provinces and 12,500 kilometres (7,800 mi) of track, 98% of which is owned and maintained by other railway companies, mostly by Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). Via Rail carried approximately 3.97 million passengers in 2016, the majority on routes along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor and had an on-time performance of 73 per cent.

David Clinton is a longtime member of the South Shore Model Railway Club, which is one of America's oldest model railroad clubs, having been founded in September 1938 in Quincy. The club is now headquartered in Bare Cove Park in Hingham where it has a large facility including a museum that is open to the public.

Lessening Stress and Nurturing Resilience

This talk has been well-received by audiences from their twenties to their senior years.

During his talk about what helps us to be more resilient and less stressed as adults, Dr. Brooks describes five main ideas/strategies:

1. Practicing "personal control” — a term he uses that captures the notion that resilient people focus on things over which they have some control or influence and do not expend time or energy trying to change things over which they have little control. (A woman in the New England Centenarian program captured this belief when she said resilience is "being at peace with that which you cannot change.")

2. Avoiding loneliness and maintaining connections with others

3. Engaging in what psychologists call TLCs (therapeutic lifestyle changes), which touch on such behaviors as exercise, diet, meditation — or relating to the first point above, TLCs are things over which we have some control.

4. Involving oneself in what he calls "contributory activities" that involve helping others. There is wonderful research to show that people across the lifespan are less stressed when they find opportunities to enrich the lives of others

5. Considering things for which you are grateful as well as expressing gratitude towards others.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Hikes through History

In Massachusetts, many parks and trails have been carved out of historical sites, whether ancient Native villages, industrial sites, or grand estates.

Using maps, historic photos, and her experiences hiking the trails described in her book, Best Day Hikes Near Boston (AMC Press 2017), Alison O’Leary describes more than a dozen day trip destinations with historical significance and interesting features in Eastern Massachusetts. These comprise varying levels of walking difficulty and a variety of scenery.

Among the places described are South Shore’s Massasoit State Park and how it got so hilly; a former rubber factory, observatory, and “penny bridge” nearly forgotten in the woods of a reservation north of Boston; the site where the last great coastal schooner was launched in New England; a place with military munitions bunkers buried in the woods; sites of former grand estates, along with stories of those who lived there; and more.

This program is made possbile by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Hooray for Hollywood! Memorable Movie Music

Enjoy an illustrated PowerPoint program with music examples from recent and vntage films plus video clips and music examples showing how films can be more memorable because of their music and how film music is preserved through recordings. Many of the examples are from the Sammy Film Music Awards, now the longest-running web awards for film music recordings. Audience members will be invited to select a favorite movie song or score.

Roger Lee Hall has been a frequent guest on radio in the past and has taught film music classes in college and adult education programs and has lectured on the subject. Bloodlines - Neville Frankel

In this riveting session, author Neville Frankel shares his journey back to South Africa after an absence of almost 40 years. Frankel will discuss the rediscovery of his own history and the legacy of the past, as well as the process of researching, writing, and speaking about his apartheid-era novel Bloodlines.

Frankel fills his talk with heartfelt personal stories that impart a real sense of the book, and the life and history that produced them both. This wide-ranging presentation will provide insights into what it meant for black and white South Africans to live under apartheid, and a fascinating view into the issues faced by South Africans today.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

The Life and Times of Frank Sinatra

Bruce Hambro presents a fast-paced program on the momentous career of the greatest male entertainer of the 20th century. The power-point lecture includes a treasure-trove of music and images from the vast catalogue of the career of “Ol’ Blue Eyes”. Bruce covers not only Sinatra’s entire artistic career, but also his sometimes controversial public relationships as well as his personal life. Many Sinatra recordings will be sampled, and singing along is encouraged.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Black Flags, Blue Waters

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Walpole Public Library Endowment Trust.
