The Art of Networking - Gary Gekow

Job fairs, corporate hiring events, Meetups and other online social media platforms are just some of the avenues where people can promote their networking skills. Above and Beyond - Michael Tougias

During an infamous thirteen-day stretch in October 1962, America faced the prospect of imminent nuclear war with the Soviet Union.  Two things saved humanity: the strategic wisdom of John F. Kennedy, and the U-2 aerial spy program.  Above and Beyond is a deeply researched, gripping account of the lives of these three men, war heroes all, who were brought together during a day that changed history.  Tougias has interviewed the U-2 pilots who discovered the missiles, eliciting special insights that have remained undisclosed in the intervening 53 years. The presentation includes three lesser-known events that put us on the brink of nuclear war.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

The Declaration of Independence - Gary Highlander

The Declaration of Independence states the principles on which our government and our identity as Americans are based. Unlike the other founding documents, the Declaration of Independence is not legally binding, but it is powerful. Abraham Lincoln called it “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.” It continues to inspire people around the world to fight for freedom and equality. It was a bold and risky – in fact, treasonous – act, to dare to defy the king of England and withdraw from British rule. Dr. Hylander will explain why and how these daring men assembled and produced this historic and revered document. His lively style is well-known to be entertaining as well as educational.

Mom's WWII Letters

After Corinne found 100+ letters from 16 WWII servicemen that her mother had written to, she traced the men's family trees with one goal in mind: to return the letters in person to their children. Learn about this on-going project and hear some of the stories of the men & their relatives. This 60-minute presentation links history & genealogy to present-day research & diligence. And it may prompt audience members to wonder what treasures lurk in their own old boxes -- and how they can share the information with others. Based on Corinne’s blog, Mom’s WWII Letters.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Walpole Public Library Endowment Trust.

Black Flags, Blue Waters

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Walpole Public Library Endowment Trust.
