Tell Me About Yourself

That is often the most common question that begins an interview. It’s a critical part of the interview because it sets the stage for the remainder of the inter view. Discussion will cover best practices on what to say, what examples to highlight, where to begin, and when/where to end to make it a compelling story. This highly interactive workshop will leave you with a new-found confidence about how to talk about yourself.

The discussion is lead by Gary Gekow, a Senior Employment Specialist/Career Coach with 30 years of recruiting experience in the Boston staffing industry. He works closely with client companies in many industries, and assists job seekers in various specialties with résumé writing, interview preparation, and career counseling services.

The Big Dig

Although Big Dig construction work has long been completed, controversy about the project remains. Boston historian David Kruh was official spokesperson for the massive undertaking and has the inside story. He describes how Boston’s land configuration has been altered over the past four centuries. Beacon Hill was reduced from three hills (“Tremont”) to one, the Back Bay was filled in, and then the far more recent Big Dig was the nation’s most expensive construction project ever – nearly $22 billion and way over estimate. With stunning photographs and other images, David will describe the work inside the tunnels and around the Zakim bridge, highlighting some of the incredible innovative technology employed.

No Irish Need Apply

No Irish Need Apply is a 90-minute slide lecture in which the many facets of the early Irish experience in Boston are examined. It begins with a look at the evidence there is of the Irish who were brought over unwillingly as indentured servants in the mid-17th Century. Then the first real migration of the Irish in 1718 - the arrival of the Scot-Irish or the "Ulster Irish" will be discussed. Next we will explore the slow pre-famine trickle of Irish Catholic immigrants coming into Boston as well as the corresponding increase in Anti-Irish/Catholic sentiment within Boston beginning with the notorious Pope's Day celebrations, and then the discussion will turn to the burning of the Ursuline Convent in 1834 in Charlestown and the Broad Street Riot of 1837.

In the third quarter of the lecture the massive wave of immigration into Boston after the Great Potato Famine will be examined with respect to the condition of the new arrivals, the neighborhoods they settled, how they banded together, the kinds of work they did to survive and their eventual assimilation into American culture. Finally there will be a discussion of the rise of the Irish within the sphere of Boston politics and the emergence of the "Ward Boss." Short vignettes, on such Irish political leaders such as Patrick Collins, Hugh O'Brien, Martin Lomasney, Patrick J. Kennedy, John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, and of course the old "Rascal King" himself James Michael Curley, will be given.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Rendezvous with Rachel Revere

It is May 2, 1775, and Rachel Revere (as portrayed by Judith Kalaora) has only once heard from her beloved husband Paul since his legendary midnight ride on the 18th of April. Still isolated from one another due to the Siege of Boston, Rachel desperately tries to create a plan which shall safely take her seven children (six step-children from Paul’s first marriage and a newborn baby of their own) from the reach of the British Regular Army in Boston. In this program, you will help Rachel, as she carefully considers the dangers and demands of each plan. Find out if Rachel is successful in her perilous mission to unite her family, amidst the cataclysm of an American Revolution.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Experiencing Heaven Now

In spite of the hyper-connectedness of social media and technology, we live in an era in which many are feeling disconnected.  We all yearn to find meaningful relationships or a more lasting connection with peace, contentment, even health.  In this lecture, we'll discuss how anyone can become genuinely aware of God's presence and experience heaven, harmony, health, and happiness here and now.

A City So Grand (Boston 1850-1900)

A City So Grand chronicles this breathtaking period in Boston’s history for the first time. Readers will experience the abolitionist movement of the 1850s, the 35-year engineering and city-planning feat of the Back Bay project, the arrival of the Irish that transformed Boston demographically, the Great Fire of 1872 and the subsequent rebuilding of downtown, Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone in Boston, and the many contributions Boston made to shaping transportation, including the Great Railroad Jubilee of 1851 and the grand opening of America’s first subway. These stories and many more paint an extraordinary portrait of a half-century of progress, leadership, and influence that redefined Boston as a world-class city.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Avoiding Age Discrimination

People often worry about age discrimination when seeking new employment, spending an inordinate amount of time convincing themselves that they are no longer relevant in the workforce. We will address how job seekers can overcome age bias and turn their fears into selling points.
