Beyond the Cemetery Gate

"Beyond the Cemetery Gate" will be presented by The Gravestone Girls, online via Zoom, at 7:00 on Thursday evening, December 3. Sponsored by Friends of the Walpole Public Library, viewing is free. Click the following link to register:   https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hCN94Sa6S9q0QkjLwUQgnQ

One of the Gravestone Girls, Brenda Sullivan, writes, "We learn to ‘read’ the cemetery for clues and information.  Using both direct observation and deductive reasoning from objects such as the writing, art, geology, and the cemetery landscape, much new insight can be revealed.  That new insight can answer questions, create new inquiries, and open doors for further detective work.  Many use the cemetery as a cursory resource for learning, genealogy, or entertainment;some haven’t tapped it at all.  This program will get guests looking at these spaces, both old and new, as a valuable resource for their data collection activities.

Brenda Sullivan has been studying and presenting on the art, history, and symbolism of gravestones for 20 years.  A lifelong Massachusetts resident, she has spent many hours in graveyards all over the world.  An education in Art History and restoration led to the creation of Gravestone Girls from a hobby to a full-time vocation.  Gravestone Girls' mission is to "Keep Our Dead Alive!" through educational lectures, tours, classes, and creation of art replicas of New England gravestones.  Annually, Brenda works with many libraries, historical societies, genealogy groups, museums, and other institutions to raise awareness and teach residents what history lies buried in their own backyards.

The Gravestone Girls also create beautiful and unusual sculpted art pieces using the primitive art from the faces of original New England gravestones as well as teach gravestone rubbing classes.  Their gravestone art is shown regularly at art and craft festivals.www.GravestoneGirls.com

Interview Preparation, Part Two: 'Tell Me About Yourself'

Often the most common question that begins an interview is, "Tell me about yourself." Job applicants should welcome this question with open arms as it gives them a beautiful chance to talk about themselves in the most positive light. The concern for most people is that it is too big a canvas. The question is very general and most people don't know where to start, what to include, and when to end their answer. This is a critical part of the interview because it is often the very first question that is asked and sets the stage for the remainder of the interview. We will discuss best practices as it relates to what to say, what examples to highlight, where to begin, and when/where to end to make it a compelling story. This highly interactive workshop will leave you with a new-found confidence about how to talk about yourself.

A live performance by Vermont acoustic duo 'Hungrytown' will be presented online via Zoom, at 7:00 on Wednesday evening, December 9. Sponsored by Friends of the Walpole Public Library, viewing is free. Click the following link to register:  https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUqc-6qrzsjH9fOP3L9yRhn99lNVPwJhPJy

Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson – otherwise known as the folk duo 'Hungrytown' – have toured worldwide for over fifteen years and released three albums. They play acoustic guitars and sing close harmony on their original songs that ring true of the American traditional folk legacy.

Hungrytown's introduction to folk music came when a close friend – who died young due to a tragic misdiagnosis – entrusted to them her collection of 1960s folk albums and her guitar (which has since been featured on all of their albums). Inspired by the grit and true-to-life experiences she heard in these traditional ballads, Hall was inspired to write the lyrics that later became her first songs, aided by Anderson’s flair for musical arrangement. Soon afterwards, Hall released two solo albums, Sings! (1999) and Sunday Afternoon (2002), both produced by Anderson. In the winter of 2003, the duo quit their boring desk jobs, moved to the green hills of Vermont, and decided to pursue a full-time career as touring musicians.

They released their first CD, Hungrytown, in 2008; Any Forgotten Thing in 2011; and Further West in 2015. The couple continue to spend more than half of each year on the road, especially roads in North America, Europe, and New Zealand.

Hungrytown's music has received extensive radio airplay worldwide and has appeared on several television shows, including Comedy Central's The Daily Show, IFC's Portlandia and Netflix's Lady Dynamite. Their third and latest album, Further West, made the top 10 on the American Folk DJ charts for two months, and at least 14 "Best of the Year" lists.

Salary and Benefits Negotiation

For many individuals, discussing compensation with employers is a risky and uncomfortable endeavor, yet it is imperative that people have the necessary tools to advocate for themselves. Is the salary commensurate with your market value? Can allowances be made with respect to additional vacation time and increased stock options? We will discuss strategies to help bolster confidence and gain knowledge as it relates to business negotiations. Massachusetts is now one of several states where employers are no longer allowed to inquire about a prospective applicant’s compensation history. We will discuss the ramifications of this new law.
