Experiencing Heaven Now

In spite of the hyper-connectedness of social media and technology, we live in an era in which many are feeling disconnected.  We all yearn to find meaningful relationships or a more lasting connection with peace, contentment, even health.  In this lecture, we'll discuss how anyone can become genuinely aware of God's presence and experience heaven, harmony, health, and happiness here and now.

A City So Grand (Boston 1850-1900)

A City So Grand chronicles this breathtaking period in Boston’s history for the first time. Readers will experience the abolitionist movement of the 1850s, the 35-year engineering and city-planning feat of the Back Bay project, the arrival of the Irish that transformed Boston demographically, the Great Fire of 1872 and the subsequent rebuilding of downtown, Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone in Boston, and the many contributions Boston made to shaping transportation, including the Great Railroad Jubilee of 1851 and the grand opening of America’s first subway. These stories and many more paint an extraordinary portrait of a half-century of progress, leadership, and influence that redefined Boston as a world-class city.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

We will also discuss the many additional usages of LinkedIn including the importance of joining groups and getting others to offer testimonials.

The discussion is lead by Gary Gekow, a Senior Employment Specialist/Career Coach with 30 years of recruiting experience in the Boston staffing industry. He works closely with client companies in many industries, and assists job seekers in various specialties with résumé writing, interview preparation, and career counseling services.

ArtMatters - Mary Cassat

An American woman was at the very heart of a radical revolution in art. Impressionism changed the art world forever. Overcoming social stigma, and cultural as well as national boundaries, Mary Cassatt defied the times to become an independent, innovative, and professional artist.

She is famous for her unromanticized images of women and children — not saccharin or sentimental, but honest, realistic, and yet still adorable.

Join us for a look at her beautiful images, her interesting life and her celebrated accomplishments.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

The Truman Doctrine

On March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman announced to Congress an American foreign policy whose stated purpose was to counter Soviet geopolitical expansion. This policy was developed further when, on July 12, 1948, Truman pledged to contain Soviet threats in Greece and Turkey. The Truman Doctrine, as it became known, implied American support for other nations allegedly threatened by Soviet communism, and it became the foundation of American foreign policy, and led, in 1949, to the formation of NATO, a military alliance that is still in effect. Historians often date the start of the Cold War from the date of Truman's speech.

Dr. Hylander will describe the post-World-War-II scenario that led to this development, and how it has played out in global history from then until now.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

After Emily

When Emily Dickinson died in 1886, she was unknown outside the small circle of her family and friends. Her sister, Lavinia, had promised she would burn all of Emily’s papers once she was gone. But Lavinia could not bring herself to destroy the remarkable cache of nearly 1,800 poems she discovered after Emily’s death. Instead she sought an editor, a person who knew and loved Emily, who could decipher the confusing manuscripts and put them into publishable form. Mabel Loomis Todd was that person. Though Emily and Mabel never met face-to-face, the friendship they had built through correspondence afforded Mabel the insight she would need as she and her daughter Millicent Todd Bingham built Emily’s literary legacy.

In After Emily, (just published last fall), the full story behind Mabel and Millicent’s work is finally revealed.

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Walpole Public Library.

Avoiding Age Discrimination

People often worry about age discrimination when seeking new employment, spending an inordinate amount of time convincing themselves that they are no longer relevant in the workforce. We will address how job seekers can overcome age bias and turn their fears into selling points.
